Disney buys Star Wars!!!

The Walt Disney Company announced today that it has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in cash and stock. George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars franchise and CEO of Lucasfilm, owns 100% of the company.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” Lucas, the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm, said in a press release announcing the acquisition. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.”

With the acquisition, Disney adds one of the world’s most enduring — and most profitable — sci-fi franchises to its ever-expanding stable. Disney, which has grown from humble animation company to massive media brand, successfully roped in Pixar in 2006 and bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009 (also for a $4 billion price tag). Buying Lucasfilm, Disney chairman Robert Iger said, was in line with the Marvel acquisition: The move essentially means Disney has cornered the market on superhero and sci-fi/fantasy films.

In a conference call with investors, Iger called Lucas a “true visionary” and applauded him for building a “company at the intersection of entertainment and technology.” As part of the deal, Disney will also take control of Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound. But the most lucrative part of the deal has to be the Star Wars brand, and to that end Disney announced it would be releasing a new film from the franchise in 2015, with more to follow.

“We believe we can do great things with these amazing assets,” Iger said.

The company also announced that it is prepping Star Wars: Episode 7 for release in 2015. "Our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years," Iger said.

Star Wars Episodes 8 and 9, Iger said, would follow "probably on a cadence of every other year and then go from there. . . . The (first) film is in early stage development right now." Lucas will serve as a creative consultant but plans to retire.

"I feel a great disturbance in the force…"

As an addicted Star Wars fan since 1977, I personally have no problem with this.

Lucasfilm and especially George Lucas and the Star Wars universe haven't really innovate for years now. What we've been getting was simply more of the old same concept over and over again. For older fans the prequel trilogy was mostly disappointing but then no matter what the anticipation was so high that most would have never appreciated it for what its always been... a sci-fi fantasy for kids.

Look at Marvel, Disney acquiring them was the best thing that could happened to the company. It brought them to a whole higher level. I expect this to happen to the Star Wars franchise.

George Lucas was rich, now he is ridiculously too rich. And seriously, what one does with $4 billion dollars? Especially at his age? New filmmakers will bring "their" visions into the Star Wars universe. Most will probably fail, but just like Lucas did so many times.

And while we are talking about Star Wars, at the Montreal Comic Con, Isaac got this Bespin guard for free!!

At the Montreal Comic Con we got the new Marvel Universe Kang action figure!

The character first appears in Avengers #8 (Sep. 1964), and was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. Kang is one of my all time favourite Marvel character.

Here is the classic Marvel Secret Wars figure and the new one.

Montreal Comic Con part 1

Last September 15th, we attended the annual Montreal Comic Con!

Last year after waiting in line for hours we couldn't get in. Now set in a new location, we got our tickets online before and arrived at the site very early. It was a cool day but by lunch time it was full of people.

There was simply so much to look at that it became a little difficult to focus on something.

There was lots of special guest like Tom Savini and Gunnar Hansen but all behind closed curtains. As expected we went for the toys!!!!! But first look at who we met!

I got Isaac a little surprise while doing the groceries. A lego City set (#7286) Prisoner Transport. Its a cool little set with 173 pieces including two mini figures (a cop and a thief) along with a police car. What nice is the car in which you can have the thief locked in.

More Grendizer (Goldorak) news!

HL Pro will re-release the PVC 10" Eagle Patrol action figures pack! It contains Duke Fleed (Actarus), Alco, Venusia and Phenicia. There will also be a Vega pack... wow! I hope to get my hands on these!

Imaginext + Grendizer

We found online this ultra cool Fisher Price Imaginext Space Shuttle playset.

There are lots of cool things. Press a button for takeoff sounds and the lights blinks. You can open the doors, solar panels and activate the stairs. It also came with a few figures.

Grendizer!

Loved that TV show as a kid. Now HL Pro recently announced some new "deformed" action figures! Both Grendizer (Goldorak) and Duke Fleed (Actarus) will be made and should be available before the end of the month.

Lego!!!!!!!

We bought the super cool "The Lego Book". Two hundred pages of Lego madness in full colour, hardcover. This amazing book takes us through the history of the Lego company and most sets are presented. This will be a must own reference for us now.

Also with it came a "Standing Small" book that celebrates 30 years of the much loved Lego mini figures.

Here's two more sets of Lego Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Isaac and I can't wait to get them.

And here's  look at all of the first series of the new Lego Legends of Chima!

"The kingdom of Chima is a magical land in which very advanced species dominate. These creatures speak and act like people. They use vehicles and machines and live in amazing castles and fortresses. They have claws, teeth, tails, and some are equipped with wings. Now they are at war with each other...

"Chima was once a pure, natural paradise, but heavily armed barbarian species have changed it and now best friends have become sworn enemies of each other. Ruthless weapons destroyed the once sacred temples. Blood-thirsty vehicles battle each other in fatal duels in the forest.

"The creatures are fiercely fighting over a powerful natural resource called Chi. which is the source of life but also unimaginable destruction.

"Only a few brave heroes in Chima understand the true nature of Chi, and that its misuse leads to the total destruction of Chima. The stories of these heroes and those who want to destroy them are known as ’The Legends of Chima'."
